Pick your battles

When one is faced with migrating a site to a fresh canvas so as to speak, there is a tendency to go for a big bang type launch and try and move everything en-mass and do a cut-over. This is very risky. It’s much better to take smaller sized bites

Let’s review what we have to migrate

  • static content
  • dynamic content
  • jamaat websites and jamaat ftp
  • mailing list engine
  • anti-spam mail handling
  • dns and other support toolchains

Whew, that’s a lot of things to do. It’s best to pick something which is self-contained and if its migrated correctly gives lots of confidence to the volunteers in the trenches and also encourages others to help in migration

Since our static content has been served via different machine/webserver for a while and all the urls referencing static content refer to the subdomain ‘media.mumineen.org’, it was an easy choice to have this served from the new server
and begin the task of migration.

Young padawan, note that this blog runs on the new server so we kinda cheated and setup the base for dynamic content but that’s a tale for another time.
